New bus routes and tender process

Following approximately five years of assessment and consultation the new Wellington bus routes have now been finalised.  The following links may be useful to you:

The GWRC is currently consulting with local communities and the Wellington City Council over the location of a number of new bus stops associated with new bus routes.

Tenders for the new Wellington bus routes will be called for in the coming months.  The contractual process will continue into 2017.  The new routes are likely to be in place in the first half of 2018.

Hybrid Buses

In January and February the Newlands Coach Services trialled a Volvo hybrid bus on its Johnsonville - CBD services.  The bus covered about 5,400kms and used 40% less fuel than other buses that operated the same routes during the same period.

In April Infratil (owners of NZ Bus) announced a US$30m deal with Wrightspeed Inc. to supply electric motors to be retrofitted to existing trolley and diesel buses (this is a hybrid concept).  See more at:

It is unclear whether either of these companies will feature hybrid technology in any tenders they make for Wellington bus services.
